Coaching – this term is known from sports and in its English origin it means “to supervise” or “to train.” The coach has the task of efficiently training an athlete or a team so that the highest possible performance is achieved. But his tasks also include motivation and psychological support, e.g. after defeats.
In our increasingly complex world, however, many individuals are also confronted with situations in which they need support. This can be in the private or in the business sector. This is where the coach comes into play, whose task it is to support the client in order to master conflicts, challenges or changes.
All people operate in their own system, which is influenced by many factors, such as partnerships, groups, colleagues, organizations, clubs, friends, etc. This complex system must be taken into account when providing support and also when developing interrelationships. In this case, we speak of systemic coaching, because there is no objective truth. When someone talks about a beautiful car, everyone has their own idea of what it should look like. The coach enables his client to discover hidden resources within his own system and for his own personality, to change perspectives and thus to help himself, within the context that is right for the client. For example, someone who comes to the conclusion that they should do more sport to get fitter is subject to their own circumstances. He has to find the time and possibly give up other activities. He can do sports with friends or alone. Thus, one person may come to the conclusion that jogging is the best option, while another rediscovers his love for football.
The coach is a companion and catalyst for these solutions, he is not a consultant or problem solver. With the help of the coach, the client develops the solution that is right for him from his own context. The diverse potentials that lie dormant in this system are to be activated and used through targeted interventions in order to bring about positive changes. Complicated? Yes and no. On the one hand, the abundance of influencing factors poses a constant challenge, on the other hand, it is precisely the system that causes blockages and restricts the scope of behavior. A coach cannot know a person better than the person knows himself. But he has tools and techniques to guide the client to a solution that is right for him. It also follows that a good coach must also be a good listener. In any case, neutrality is a basic requirement in order to deal with the client’s concerns adequately and impartially, because the coach does not take a position. He is not a friend, he is a helper.
Coaching is used in many areas. To name just a few examples:
These concerns can lie in the private sphere, but also, and increasingly, arise from the business environment. Straight
are becoming increasingly important. Companies often invest specifically in these measures in order to increase the performance of their employees, promote their motivation, improve their decision-making and, last but not least, promote strategic skills. These coaching sessions take on an additional dimension when it comes to assignments abroad and the client is confronted with a different culture that is foreign to him.
Coaching is voluntary – no one can be forced to be coached. This is the basis for the relationship of trust between coach and client, without which coaching cannot function. This confidentiality naturally also applies to the outside world. All actions during the coaching process are explained in an understandable way. This is the basis for the necessary transparency of the process and the neutrality of the coach – manipulative actions are excluded. The coaching process comprises several sessions and is limited in time. The duration of the process depends on the individual requirements and agreements, but it is not a permanent accompaniment. The coaching process ends when the client’s request has been dealt with. Therefore, a specific number of hours cannot be specified from the outset.

What has been learned remains retrievable over a long period of time. In addition, there was great fun in the workshops and humor about our own culture.
During the training, it became clear to us how enormous the differences in mentality between Russia and Germany are. This awareness will help us in our collaboration with the Russian plant in Kaluga.
During the intercultural training China, the China expert vividly conveyed the topic – he has known Chinese and European culture for many years and can analyze and interpret the differences excellently because of this.
The Global Cultures Workshop has enabled our team to focus on core tasks. In the future, this workshop will be an integral part of the preparation for all colleagues.
